Sometimes the difference between a smile that bothers you and one that makes you feel confident comes down to tiny details — a slightly pointed canine, a rough edge from an old chip, teeth that are all one flat length, or corners that just don’t look quite right. These imperfections might be measured in fractions of a millimeter, but they can change the entire character of your smile.

Cosmetic tooth reshaping — also called teeth contouring or enameloplasty — is one of the most subtle yet impactful cosmetic treatments Dr. Kriston offers at his Danville practice. By carefully sculpting the enamel surface of your teeth, he can refine shapes, smooth rough edges, create symmetry, and give your smile a more youthful, vibrant personality. And in many cases, it’s done in a single visit with no pain, no anesthesia, and no recovery time.

The Art of Adding and Subtracting

Dr. Kriston approaches every cosmetic case with a simple philosophy: sometimes the best result comes from adding material (with dental bonding or veneers), and sometimes it comes from subtracting (with cosmetic reshaping). Often, the most natural-looking results combine both.

In fact, it’s sometimes better to round or smooth a chipped tooth rather than adding material with bonding. The wear pattern and character of your teeth may actually look more natural when blended into your smile rather than built back up. An experienced cosmetic eye knows the difference — and that distinction is what separates artful cosmetic dentistry from simply “fixing” teeth.

With 38 years of cosmetic experience, Dr. Kriston can look at your smile and suggest changes that most patients wouldn’t think to ask for but immediately love when they see the result. Through artistry and design, your smile’s personality can be all your own — looking both beautiful and natural.

Does Tooth Reshaping Hurt?

No. Reshaping is one of the most comfortable procedures in all of dentistry. Enamel — the outer layer of your teeth — has no nerve endings, so sculpting it is completely painless. There’s no need for anesthesia, no needles, and no numbness afterward.

The changes involved are also very conservative. Your teeth have up to 2.5 millimeters of enamel, and cosmetic reshaping typically involves adjustments measured in tenths of a millimeter. Dr. Kriston removes only what’s needed to achieve the desired shape, leaving your enamel strong and healthy.

How Cosmetic Reshaping Can Change the Personality of Your Smile

This is where Dr. Kriston’s artistic eye truly shines. Tooth reshaping isn’t just about removing rough
spots — it’s about changing the visual message your smile sends:
Softening pointed teeth

Pointed canines can look sharp, aggressive, even fang-like. By gently rounding the tips, Dr. Kriston softens their appearance, creating a friendlier, more approachable smile. This is one of the most requested reshaping treatments, and the result is immediate.

Creating a more youthful appearance

Teeth that are flat across the top and all the same length have that worn-down look — and frankly, they reveal your age. By making teeth slightly different lengths while keeping them symmetrical on both sides of your smile, Dr. Kriston can erase years from your appearance. Younger smiles have variation; worn smiles are uniform.

Rounding corners for femininity

The shape of your teeth communicates more than you might realize. Rounded corners create a softer, more feminine appearance. Sharper, more angular edges read as masculine and strong. Dr. Kriston adjusts these details to match the aesthetic you’re going for.

Smoothing chips and rough edges

Small chips and irregularities that catch your eye (or your lip) can often be smoothed away in minutes, instantly improving the look and feel of your smile without any restorative material.

Creating the appearance of better alignment

Minor overlaps or uneven edges can sometimes be visually corrected by reshaping the teeth rather than moving them orthodontically. The teeth don’t actually move — they just look more aligned.

Cosmetic Reshaping and Invisalign — A Creative Combination

One of the most innovative ways Dr. Kriston uses cosmetic reshaping is in combination with Invisalign clear aligner therapy. Rather than just moving teeth into position and calling it done, he approaches orthodontic cases with a cosmetic eye — using selective reshaping to enhance the final result in ways that aligners alone cannot.

Here’s a common example: crowded lower teeth often have an extremely wide biting edge and dark triangles between them — those small black spaces at the gum line that make teeth look older and less healthy. Dr. Kriston can “slenderize” these teeth by carefully narrowing their width, which accomplishes three things simultaneously:

  • It creates room for Invisalign to correct the crowding without removing teeth entirely
  • It gives each tooth a more attractive, natural taper
  • It eliminates or significantly reduces those unattractive dark triangles between teeth — and beyond the cosmetic improvement, closing these open triangles has a real health benefit: it eliminates spaces where food, plaque, and tartar accumulate, helping to maintain healthier gums

This technique — called interproximal reduction (IPR) when done between teeth — is a standard part of Invisalign treatment, but most dentists treat it as a purely mechanical step. Dr. Kriston sees it as a cosmetic opportunity. The reshaping isn’t just about making room — it’s about making each tooth look better in the process.

This creative approach sometimes avoids the need to extract teeth entirely, giving patients a more conservative path to a beautiful, well-aligned smile.

There’s an important caveat, though. If the teeth are severely worn at many different angles — which is common in patients with long-standing crowding — reshaping alone may not be enough. When some teeth have already worn through their enamel, trying to line up the biting edges by subtracting more isn’t realistic. In these cases, Dr. Kriston may recommend building up an adjacent tooth with a veneer rather than reshaping the one next to it. The result is a combination approach: reshaping where you can, veneering where you need to, and using Invisalign to move everything into alignment. It’s a more nuanced plan, but it’s how you get the best result when wear patterns are complex.

Reshaping as Part of a Smile Makeover

Cosmetic reshaping is rarely a headline treatment — but it’s one of the most frequently used supporting techniques in comprehensive smile makeovers. When Dr. Kriston designs a smile makeover involving veneers, bonding, or whitening, reshaping often plays a supporting role:

  • Smoothing adjacent teeth so they blend naturally with new veneers or bonding
  • Creating better symmetry between the left and right sides of the smile
  • Adjusting the length of teeth that won’t be receiving veneers so they harmonize with the teeth that will
  • Refining the bite after orthodontic treatment so teeth come together evenly
  • Smoothing minor chips on teeth that don’t need bonding — sometimes subtracting is better than adding

Think of reshaping as the finishing touch — the detail work that makes the difference between a smile that looks “done” and one that looks effortlessly natural.

Beyond Cosmetics — Reshaping to
Balance Your Bite

Tooth reshaping isn’t only about how your smile looks — it can also be about how your teeth function together. Dr. Kriston uses the same enameloplasty technique on both front and back teeth to perform a procedure called occlusal equilibration: carefully adjusting the biting surfaces so that all of your teeth make even contact when you close.

Think of it like aligning and balancing the tires on a car. When your bite is uneven, certain teeth absorb more force than they should. Over time, this uneven loading can lead to tooth fracture, excessive wear, muscle tension, headaches, and stress on the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). By selectively reshaping the high spots and interferences, Dr. Kriston creates more harmony between your teeth, your chewing muscles, and your jaw joints.

Equilibration is especially valuable for patients who clench or grind, who have had extensive dental work that may have altered their original bite, or who experience jaw pain, clicking, or muscle fatigue. It’s a conservative, painless approach to functional problems that might otherwise require more invasive treatment.

Dr. Kriston often combines equilibration with cosmetic reshaping — improving both the appearance and the function of your bite in the same visit. And because enamel reshaping is painless and requires no anesthesia, patients are often surprised at how comfortable and quick the process is, even when both cosmetic and functional adjustments are made.

Is Cosmetic Reshaping Right for You?

Tooth reshaping works best for patients with:

  • Minor cosmetic imperfections — small chips, uneven edges, slightly pointed teeth, rough surfaces
  • Good enamel thickness — Dr. Kriston evaluates your enamel to ensure there’s enough to reshape safely
  • Healthy teeth with no significant decay or structural weakness
  • Realistic expectations — reshaping refines; it doesn’t transform. For larger changes, veneers or bonding may be more appropriate

Reshaping is not ideal for teeth with thin enamel, large chips or fractures, significant discoloration (which requires veneers or whitening), or major alignment issues (which require orthodontics or veneers).

One important limitation: when a patient has worn through their enamel, what we can accomplish with reshaping is significantly reduced. We can still round corners to soften the overall look of the tooth, but if the goal is to line up biting edges evenly and some teeth have already lost their enamel, it often makes more sense to build up an adjacent tooth with bonding or a veneer rather than trying to subtract more from a tooth that’s already worn thin. Dr. Kriston evaluates each tooth individually to determine the right approach.

During your consultation, Dr. Kriston will honestly recommend whether reshaping alone will achieve your goals or whether a combination approach would be more effective.

One of the Most Affordable and Fastest Cosmetic Treatments

Cosmetic reshaping is one of the best-kept secrets in cosmetic dentistry. It’s quick — often completed in a single visit of 30 minutes or less. It’s painless — no injections, no numbness, no anesthesia needed. And it’s one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments available, since it involves no lab work, no materials, and no follow-up appointments.

But here’s something important to understand: this is not like a haircut. When enamel is reshaped, it doesn’t grow back. The changes are permanent. That’s why it’s critical to have the procedure done by someone with deep experience in cosmetic dentistry — someone who understands how even a fraction of a millimeter affects the way a tooth catches light, relates to its neighbors, and reads as natural in your smile. In the right hands, reshaping is one of the most elegant tools in cosmetic dentistry. In the wrong hands, it can create problems that require more extensive treatment to fix.

For patients who want a noticeable improvement without the investment of veneers or a full makeover, reshaping (often combined with minor bonding) can deliver a surprisingly significant result for a fraction of the cost.

And because the results are immediate — you see the change in the mirror the moment Dr. Kriston finishes — it’s one of the most satisfying procedures for both patient and dentist.

Reshaping, Bonding, or Veneers — How to Know Which You Need

Reshaping (subtracting) is best when the issue is excess — a tooth that’s too pointed, too long, too rough, or has an edge that doesn’t match its neighbors. You’re removing small amounts of enamel to reveal a better shape underneath.

Bonding (adding) is best when the issue is a deficit — a chip that needs to be filled, a gap that needs to be closed, or a tooth that’s too short or too narrow. You’re building material onto the tooth to create the shape you want.

Veneers (covering) are best when the changes needed are too extensive for reshaping or bonding alone — significant color change, major shape alteration, or multiple concerns on the same tooth.

In many cases, Dr. Kriston combines two or even all three techniques on different teeth within the same smile. A veneer on one tooth, bonding on another, reshaping on a third — each chosen for what that specific tooth needs. This is what comprehensive cosmetic dentistry looks like in practice, and it’s why having a dentist with 38 years of experience across all these techniques matters.

By far the best dentist I’ve had! Extremely thoughtful in his work, taking time to explain the reasoning behind decisions and will even show you the details of what is going on with your teeth through a micro camera. I had a few significant issues with my teeth, and Michael was the first of four dentists I had seen to provide a thoughtful long term solution in the least invasive way possible. He is truly concerned with the health and function of your teeth and gums, and is extremely skilled to implement great solutions. Would highly recommend.

I had my first visit with Dr. Kriston and had the best experience in a dental office, by far. I was looking for a dentist to revamp my smile and a friend recommended Dr. Kriston. Dr. Kriston spent a lot of time listening to my vision and together we came up with a plan for my smile that I'm very happy with. Everyone in the office was friendly, helpful and welcoming. My bar was set high and Dr. Kriston went well above it with his knowledge, recommendations and real understanding of my situation.

The front receptionist is very attentive and supportive; she answered all my questions and clearly explained the cost and my insurance. I qualified for an interest free payment plan and was able to afford my dream smile.
